The end of the term is upon us! For some instructors, that means lots of grading, lost weekends, and tons of paperwork. While we can’t save you from all the paperwork, we’ve made significant progress in helping you save time when grading those term papers.
First, let’s hear it from our instructors this term who used TimelyGrader to streamline their grading and feedback processes:
“This time the grading process took about one hour, manually it probably would have taken two hours and I wouldn't have been able to give feedback in that time.” - Emily Treen, SFU
“I want to reiterate that, in my opinion, while this had benefits for me as an instructor, the biggest improvement was on the quality of student work.” - Philippos Savvides, ASU
Alright - onwards to the updates that are available now!
You can now save new and existing rubrics as rubric templates in the library, which you can then easily apply to other assignments. This is extremely helpful for institutions that have standardized rubrics across similar assessment types.
Later this month, we will be releasing our very own rubric generator. It’s not a simple ‘create a rubric’ generator. It is designed specifically to be compatible with AI grading and feedback, meaning it will be more objective and consistent!
We spent several sprints experimenting with improvements to grading accuracy and feedback relevance. Overall, grading accuracy in baseline assignments increased by 30% while only slightly increasing the time to complete. This new model reasoning also enables the platform to tackle larger rubrics with 12 criteria which previously we struggled with.
Feedback generated by the AI now takes into account the suggested rubric grades beforehand, meaning feedback is more targeted towards weaker parts of the student submission.
Validating the AI-generated feedback and suggested grades is an essential part of the instructor’s workflow. Annotations will allow grading suggestions and explanations to appear directly on the student paper so you don’t need to dig around to validate if the grading suggestion is accurate. Our goal is to reduce the time it takes for you to validate the AI results.
This also allows students to see relevant feedback directly on their student paper. Imagine how comments work on Google Docs and you will get the point. Students are already saying that this will save them a ton of time and make feedback even more digestible. Ultimately, this will lead to more students reading and implementing the generated feedback.
In our next newsletter, we will dive deeper into annotations and talk more about future support for 1) Short answers 2) Discussion boards, and 3) LMS Quiz compatibility.
From everyone at TimelyGrader, best of luck with the end-of-term craze!
Enhancing education with AI-powered grading and feedback.
